Nickel has characteristics that are useful in a range of applications from chemical processing and electronics to industrial energy equipment. Commercially pure nickel is used in battery components and lead wires. The heat resistant alloys are found in gas-turbine components, industrial furnaces, and rocket engines.
Ryerson’s range of over 70,000 products includes a limited line of nickel products. We offer monel, incoloy, and other hard-to-find alloys. Nickel alloys are available in a variety of forms including rod and bar, plate, sheet, strip and pipe.

What are nickel alloys and in which fields are they most useful? Commercially pure or low-alloy nickel has characteristics that are useful in several fields, notably chemical processing and electronics.
Is nickel resistant to corrosion? Yes, and because of its corrosion resistance, nickel is used to maintain product purity in the processing of foods and synthetic fibers.
What are some of the characteristics of nickel that make it most useful? Compared with nickel alloys, commercially pure nickel has high electrical conductivity. It also has a high Curie temperature and good magnetostrictive properties.
What are the typical electrical/electronic applications of nickel? The typical applications are lead wires, battery components, thyratrons, magnetorestrictive transducers and sparking electrodes. As with electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity of nickel is relatively high and is a reason that the metal is frequently used for heat exchangers.
What is the hardening rate of nickel? Nickel has a relatively low hardening rate, but it can be cold worked to moderately high strength levels while maintaining ductility. The latter characteristics make nickel a useful material for previous metal-cladding. Annealed nickel has a low hardness and good ductility and maleabilty. Those attributes, combined with good weldability, make the metal highly fabricable.
Ryerson processes bars, tubing and pipes, as well as structural shapes, cut to any length and finished for assembly.
With locations worldwide, Ryerson draws from a broad base of unique supply chain services to assemble the right combination that produces the ideal solution for your business. From start to finish, we'll manage logistics across all phases of the supply chain.
